Location
The entire Las Vegas Strip is closed down for this massive party. It is done in phases, with the center Strip area (The Mirage and Harrah's area) closed down first, then the closure moving toward both ends. Plenty of people are already outside getting revved up as early as 6 PM.
Street closures start soon after and by 10 PM all four miles of the Las Vegas Strip is all yours! Downtown Las Vegas (known as the Fremont Street Experience or Glitter Gulch) also has a party, but the real party is on The Strip. Downtown usually features festivities and a couple of classic rock bands. You can do that other times of the year. Even if you stay downtown, get down to The Strip!

Parking
If you aren't staying on The Strip (or within a couple blocks walk), you are going to need to park. This is the one time of year that hotels limit their parking garages to only people staying in the hotel. Many lots open up and are happy to let you park for $10 or $20. Screw that!
We still suggest you park by 8 PM minimum. Earlier is better. Get down, hang on The Strip, get your drink on and have fun! Good parking area: Across from Mandalay Bay (between Mandalay and the airport) are a number of small side streets (El Diablo and Dewey take you back into that area). Back in this area are plenty of streets with public parking. Nobody even realizes all that space is back there!

Weather
Las Vegas is one of the most sunny cities in the United States but once the sun goes down the temperatures do fall. Desert nights in the winter can and do get cold. Bring a good jacket. If it turns out to be warmer, you can always leave it in the room or your car.

Eating
Eat early. You don't want to be in a mile-long coffee shop line at 10:00 PM and just be paying your check about midnight.

Crowds
You can be in the middle of a raging crowd or have plenty of elbow room and still enjoy the street party, fireworks, and fun. It is very simple: The most intense crowds are in the Center Strip area in front of The Mirage and Harrah's. Packed wall-to-wall, you can barely move.
However, as you move away from that area (in either direction) things thin out. Down around New York, New York and up by The Stardust there is plenty of space and room. Just head toward or away from the middle of The Strip to fine tune your level of party comfort!
